Milestone Update: Sekiban redump verifies the need for restoration.

So, one of the many milestones I was trying to get to all these years has just happened.

I sent some 8M Packs to ikari_01 of snesfreaks (Details as to why him are a long story involving me taking responsibility for some issues with the crowdfunded 8M Pack purchases.) and something highly surprising came out of the result.

The good news? BS Zelda no Densetsu: Inishie no Sekiban Dai-1-wa has been redumped and it’s ROM is verified.

The bad news? BS Zelda no Densetsu: Inishie no Sekiban Dai-1-wa has been redumped and it’s ROM is verified.

If you need further explanation on that, here’s the AST page on the BS Zelda Homepage. The very reason the “restoration project” exists is because the original ROM releases had significant chunks of data not present, including the indoor tiles.

While I don’t know the origin of the four on the page, I do know this: The only difference between them on the site and this redump is a mere copier header. And y’know, those can be removed without incident, leading to…

That’s right: 100% IDENTICAL ROMs. Actually, this is baffling even by my standards… My main reason to hold the Sekiban ROMs suspect was the blanked-out date value in the BS-X headers, but for some reason this redump – which came out of my very own 8M Memory Pack – has this same issue! This probably explains the “scene” releases of the BS Marvelous ROMs, as well… I’ll need to report this to No-Intro and see what discussion happens on that.

I now have no reason to doubt the validity of the Sekiban dumps anymore… they are as good as it’s gonna get, missing data and all. It’s unfortunate… yet, at the same time, I feel like a weight was lifted from my shoulders. The burden of this duty is no longer hanging on my fandom-centered conscience.

Because of how the verification turned out, this milestone has been rather bittersweet for me. The BS Zeldas, obviously, introduced me to the Satellaview, and a part of me was hoping I could find a “more complete” Sekiban ROM dump. However, this redump tells me that this is simply impossible. The restorations on the BS Zelda Homepage may be the only way to play the games for the foreseeable future.
This also tells me that I should expect similar if I seek out Kodomo Chousadan Mighty Pockets Chousa 3, another ROM which seems to have incomplete portions and an early-game crash in emulation, which may be restorable but at the cost of data preservation.

Also, this has inspired me to do an update for the Sekiban ROMs restoration patch in Japanese… I know the Japanese audience wants to play these again, and I would be glad to help them to the best of my ability. Expect that on the blog in a mere few days, or even hours… written entirely in poorly machine-done Japanese. I need to practice that more.

I will put the redumped ROM up here for reference, even though it is identical down to the byte.

Spreading Christmas glee from Wii years ago.

Since I don’t have anything Satellaview-y for Christmas ready this year, I’ll try making up a bit for it by putting up this Christmas-y Nintendo program from 2010. A brief, one-episode special revival of the “Super Mario Club” TV Show program I once brought up on the blog many years ago.

Also, it’s a nice test of the Dailymotion embedding.

Dailymotion video move

Just a small update. Unfortunately the blog hasn’t been updated with anything relevant lately due to the previous events referred to.

I hope to make up for this sometime. Maybe next year? As Mr. Iwata would say, “Please understand.”

Anyway, on the note of the YouTube stuff, I would like to say that due to all that, from henceforth up until YouTube bows to my feet and prays for forgivemess, I will be using Dailymotion.

Yes, I know I called Dailymotion “the darkest depths of hell” before, but hey, they let me be Official User now! 😀

… I’m such a sellout.

Since I made sure to list all the YouTube Satellaview videos as “Unlisted” rather than private, for my own ease, this will not retroactively affect the blog. But coming forward, expect Dailymotion embeds rather than YouTube ones, for better or for worse.

The mystery of the BS Dragon Quest ROM, continued.

So, when I went to practice my livestreaming, I used the BS Dragon Quest ROM as my ginuea pig.

Here’s one of the videos I put up. I apologize that it’s probably crummy – I’m playing blind in part because I suspect it might be easier to find Satellaview-specific elements if I’m not using a guide tailored for quick advancement through the game.

If you stay tuned until the end, you might notice I found something ELSE peculiar about the ROM, in comparison to the original broadcast.

I would like to once again ask, can anyone here PLEASE tell me where this originated from?

In the meantime, I put up for download the hack of the ROM. It’s just a quick header hack – the most obvious error is that there’s a ASCII “I” from the end of the english “BS DRAGON QUEST I” name that overwrote the file allocation byte. After changing that up, the game boots as expected and runs with no issues on a sd2snes.

Your irregular “donations wanted” reminder + I’m goofing around on Twitch.

Hey folks, just another one of these. This time I at least have a good setup for it from the Twitch channel I’ve recently set up and am experimenting with.

Getting new material for Satellablog – and thus here – can really add up, especially since I tend to import from Japan often! I’ve managed to get as far as I have with only a handful of donations, but more would certainly be appreciated! Any amount is fine!

Incentives to donate, as I assume is similar with other people who take donations, may include:

Playing a game on request.
Playing a particular musical piece or playlist with Satellaview Soundlink games.
Trying to play a game in a certain manner.

Currently my Twitch has a run I tried of BS Super Mario Collection Dai-3-shuu, which I also upped to YouTube (but don’t feel like embedding here because it’s going on 3 in the morning.)

I probably won’t expect many donations… as usual…. but at the very least, Twitch visitors would be appreciated! Thank you all in advance!

Not the best Holiday music, but it’s all good.

So, a while back I said that I was trying to find some FLACs for SFC Dragon Quest I Symphonic Suite, as in the set specifically that played for BS Dragon Quest on the Satellaview. I will note that while my ears aren’t perfect, I DID notice differences in at least the earlier Famicom-based Symphonic Suites, which is why I was particularly picky in this instance.

Thankfully, I found a “Dragon Quest I & II Symphonic Suite” set, and it sounds very much like the real deal as far as my ears can tell. I’ve uploaded the flacs on a new Soundcloud account.

You can access said Soundcloud account here.

Since I’m not sure what other FLACs I can collect currently, any suggestions there will be appreciated. Thanks!

On matters directly affecting the blog’s quality: YouTube betrayed me.

I will once again sincerely apologize for the hoopla surrounding the video embeds lately. You see, YouTube has been swindling me. I’ve commented on this prior in my Twitter, and I’ll summarize the past month of this malarky here.

To start, back on November 2nd – the same day as the forced Google+ integrations, if you recall – YouTube abruptly disables monetization on my original channel. In a panic I tried changing my channel and moving stuff over, only for them to, 20 days later, disable the monetization on THAT, as well, SPECIFICALLY CITING my previous account. YouTube will not even let me start over.

I will note that both accounts were completely in good standing when this happened, and I had no prior warnings or incidents to explain this. The timing of it, in fact, gave me the perception that they simply wanted to screw over a legacy YouTube user for their “Fresh new thing” in the Google+ integration.

As I struggled with trying to speak to them (Help Center has not responded to any of my messages, and the support forum abruptly stopped talking to me the moment I noticed a contradiction between their stated policy and the reality of my circumstances.), something ELSE happened that rubbed the salt deeper into the wound.

The attack of the ghost of 4Kids.

This video was copyright striked:

Under a claim by the supposed “4Kids”.

Now, cast aside all prior thought on this, and let’s get this fact straight: 4Kids has been defunct for over a year, and no longer owned anything in that video. Furthermore, the very e-mail domain main of the alleged claimer was nonfunctional. In other words, there was no one going to be on the receiving end of the inevitable counter-claim I made, which is why this video is back up.

But, the question is, why? Not just why it happened at all, but why the TIMING of it? I had that video up for TWO YEARS, and during the time 4Kids was alive, they knew, because they already had that claim on my video WITHOUT copyright striking it.

Combined with the lack of a 4Kids in the current day, and… it’s quite apparent, YouTube (under Google’s ownership, so as to not cause confusion with the legacy of YouTube, as I’ve been a member of the site since 2006) THEMSELVES did this.
To give them the benefit of the doubt, I’d presume they tried strengthening their copyright bots and just neglected to remove the claims from an obviously-defunct company… but still! This is the most outrageous thing that’s ever happened to me in my entire time on the internet yet! And with how it was timed, it’d be easy to believe they were intentionally trying to take me down! This is SICKENING.

Some kind of action needs to be done. These sorts of issues with YouTube can’t stand.
They should NOT be allowed to harass their community like this, especially with money on the line.

I think sooner or later I’m going to contact a lawyer…
