Description
Some background: FMW, Frontier Martial-Arts Wrestling was a Japanese professional wrestling event started in 1989 by Atsushi Onita, your typical macho egotistical ex-politician, ex-pro-wrestler. Think cheesy WWF of the early 1990's with Jesse Ventura, but in Japan and you should be thinking about this game. It's a story based wrestling / fighting game that is just awful. It's very difficult to move about and attack making it difficult to play. Only a true fan of FMW and of Onita would enjoy the game.
I was very disappointed in this game. I like FMW as a promotion and I like all their wild matches and weapons, but I don't like their game. The control is very poor, graphics are not impressive, and neither is the gameplay. Another thing FMW lacks is options - you only have two choices of matches: One Player and Two Player.
You can only chose from four FMW wrestlers. Once you choose your favorite, you will go on to fight FMW style matches in a Sumo ring. The circular ring is surrounded by explosives, which take much of your power if you leave the circle. The gameplay is much like Street Fighter - two wins take you to the next bout.
Personally, I was unable to win one match, after more then half an hour of trying. Also, I was unable to do more then three different moves with any character.
Perhaps the game is more enjoyable when you know the controls. Maybe more wrestlers become available as you win matches (such as the female wrestler on the title SCREEN) Maybe there are some interesting matches later on.... But I doubt I will ever find out, since this game is frustratingly hard.
Bottom line: FMW is fun for the first five minutes, but it soon becomes frustrating. Terrible control seriously hinders this game.
